On July 14, 2009, the
floodgates opened as
supporters crowded the public hearing room to urge the Landmarks Preservation
Commission (LPC) to finally designate the former IRT Powerhouse as
an Individual Landmark.
This was the third public hearing on the
Powerhouse since 1979 . The building has hovered in "Landmarks Limbo"
due to opposition from its owner, Con Edison.
For this reason, the Powerhouse remains unprotected to this day.

Add your name to the growing list of Powerful Allies who support the landmark designation of the IRT Powerhouse...
Step 1: Email Hon. Meenakshi Srinivasan, Chair of the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. Below is a sample message to send to backlog95@lpc.nyc.gov:
I urge the Landmarks Preservation Commission to act to designate the original IRT Powerhouse at 59th Street and 11th Avenue an official NYC individual Landmark. This McKim Mead & White-designed Beaux-Arts building is a magnificent example of industrial architecture from the City Beautiful movement. Its unique architectural significance and importance to New York City's transportation and industrial history merit landmark protection. Development immediately to the north and south of the Powerhouse site make it especially urgent that the Commission act now to save this remarkable structure for future generations of New Yorkers.
Sincerely,
